“Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer… because it teaches you how to think.”

Elementary students across the district start the year with a bang, with CISD’s new #STREAM initiative!  The #STREAM initiative offers students in kindergarten through 5th grade the chance to learn coding skills in specialized classes along with hands on labs in five #STREAM subjects:  Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math.

Learning how to code is not a diversion from regular subjects taught in school.  The traditional subjects are still as important as ever! But learning coding skills will help CISD students to take those subjects to the next level.  Coding offers students a way to use what they’ve learned to improve their world.  A student who learns coding skills will understand more than just science, reading, and math.  They will understand how to create an idea with these subjects, hold it in their hands, and then press a button to put their ideas into the world!

Students will use high-interest lessons from Code.org to build their technology skills.  As their abilities grow, they will use their new knowledge in exciting engineering and science projects.  One of the best parts of the #STREAM initiative is that it is not just for students.  Anyone interested in improving their coding skills is invited to visit Code.org to learn.  According to Code.org, 1 million of the best jobs in America may go unfilled because only 1 in 4 schools teaches computer science.  CISD’s #STREAM initiative will position our students to have the knowledge and skills they’ll need to succeed.
