On Saturday, October 19, 2019, thirty-three young ladies from Irma Marsh Middle School (IMMS) had the opportunity to attend the annual Sister to Sister Summit. The summit is held for middle school aged girls that attend school in Castleberry ISD as well as Fort Worth ISD. Tarrant County College Northwest Campus hosted the event where college women from multiple universities facilitated the activities and games throughout the day, focusing on topics such as respect and anti-bullying.

Upon arrival to the event, the girls went through the breakfast buffet line where they enjoyed breakfast burritos and fruit. The girls were then divided into their groups for the day with each college student working directly with 2 to 3 students. Our young ladies were able to make new friends from other Fort Worth middle schools, while connecting with their mentor college student.

After eating breakfast, Dr. Zarina Blankenbaker, TCC Northwest President, spoke to the group about getting an education beyond high school and the impact it would have on each girl’s life. She shared information regarding TCC and some statistics about TCC that were of interest to the girls. The groups then moved into their meeting rooms for the remainder of the morning where the college students led the girls through activities, small “chats,” and games. Students met back in the conference room where box lunches were waiting on them.

After lunch, groups returned to their meeting rooms for more interaction and games as they learned more about respecting others, and how to help promote anti-bullying.

At the end of the day, the groups took pictures, visited, and honored the college women that ran the summit. The IMMS girls were so excited to be able to participate in this summit. As the day ended, they were all smiles and noted that they looked forward to attending next year. The girls left with a free Sister to Sister T-shirt, Goodie bags, and a ticket to be in the door prize drawing at the end of the day. It was a fantastic day for all involved.
