Castleberry ISD is thrilled to announce the promotion of Sara Horton as the district’s new transition specialist. Immediately following college, Horton started her career in education at Castleberry Independent School District. She has served the district for the past 4 years in the roles of Community Based Instruction (CBI)/Life Skills Teacher and the Special Education Department Head at Castleberry High School.
During her time at Castleberry ISD, she has strived to further the inclusion opportunities for her students with disabilities. With the collaboration of other teachers, her students now attend Theater and CTE Health Science, Construction and Culinary classes. She is in the process of implementing and growing a new CBI Partners Program at the high school for general education students to be a buddy to our students with disabilities in their elective courses. Last year, Horton was awarded as one of the 2022-23 CHS Teachers of the Year. She is now serving as the special education department head and one of the Class of 2024 Senior Sponsors.
Horton obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, with a focus in General Education and Special Education, from the University of North Texas. She is currently continuing her education at the University of North Texas where she is obtaining a Master’s degree in Autism Intervention.
Horton is very thankful to the Board of Education and the Special Education Admin team for allowing her to continue to challenge herself in the area of advocating for students with disabilities. She appreciates working for a district that continues to strive in providing equal opportunities for all students and is excited to help with that mission on a different level. Horton is eager to start her role as the Transition Specialist for the district where she can further establish connections with the community and parents, so our students with disabilities can have successful futures outside of high school.
